Growing Opportunities

Kale Bud

Grannygear is supposed to be about cycle touring. However many posts on here are devoted to other things (like permaculture). This post is different from all others as well. This post is about Growing Opportunities. For those of us luck to live in Duncan we have a chance to be part of a community farm. Growing Opportunities is a great way for people like me to learn a few things about farming.

Can’t stop eathing this stuff

I can learn from really knowledgeable people of how to grow food on a larger the backyard scale. I also get a chance to be outside, farming and having a good time. It is also a great way to connect with a part of this community. And it provides me with some amazing food.

This evening Tanya and I went to the farm to pick some kale buds. The buds are starting to flower. Bright yellow flowers reaching for the sky, trying attract some insect to pollinate it. We have to pick them before they flower, the flowers make the kale taste a little bitter, and if you want to sell them, they can’t have flower (the flowers wilt very quickly and no one wants to buy wilted veg).

Garlic Growing

It was a wonderful evening and I think Tanya took more pictures then kale. Now we have a ton of kale left over and we don’t really know what to do with it. Thinking we could make some pesto…actually that is our only plan thus far.

After picking some kale buds we went around to pick some stinging nettle. Not really sure what I am going to do with that either, but I do have some mint in the garden so I might make another pesto.
